Insurance
Matters:
In general, there are
basically two rules:
- patients are usually
required to pay in full prior to surgery,
and claim reimbursement from their
insurance provider.
- Usually, insurance
providers do cover surgery based on
medical necessity. Cosmetic or esthetic
reasons are usually not reasons for
coverage by insurance providers.
But please review the
exceptions and comments listed below:
1. For USA residents being
operated within the USA:
- If patients have insurance
coverage confirmed by the provider, it is
usually not necessary for the patient to
pay for the surgery, except for deposits
and deductible. Deposits can usually be
refunded.
- Coverage is generally
based on medical necessity. Although
insurance providers often claim to cover
the procedure, it is recommended that the
patient receive confirmation by the
provider prior to surgery. Surgeons will
require payment by the patient if
confirmation has not been received prior
to surgery, and patient will need to
claim reimbursement.
- To confirm coverage,
insurance providers will usually require
documentation proving the medical
necessity for the procedure, such as
letter from doctor or surgeon, proof that
alternative treatments have not been
successful, etc.
- Certain insurance
providers will cover surgery for patients
traveling abroad to have the procedure.
2. For other nationals being
operated in their own countries with national
health coverage:
